La Fenice Opera House
Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice is one of the most famous and important opera houses in Italy.
The Origins of the Name "La Fenice"
Erected between 1790 and 1792, it represents a rebirth, as the name suggests. This rebirth refers to the Nobile Società dei Palchettisti (Noble Society of Box-Seat Holders), who built this splendid opera house. They constructed it after the luxurious Teatro San Benedetto, which they managed, changed hands and was passed into the possession of the wealthy Venier family, who owned the land on which the theatre stood.
For this reason, the society built an even more beautiful and luxurious theatre, which they named La Fenice.
During its two centuries of existence, the opera house was destroyed by two devastating fires. However, like the legendary phoenix, it rose from the ashes both times, even more beautiful than before.
In the early 19th century, La Fenice hosted significant political events and served as the State opera house. To welcome Emperor Napoleon, the hall was adorned with silver and light blue decorations, and a lavish private box was constructed. In the following years, a sumptuous royal box was designed.
